M.S. Product Design & Manufacture
"The best way to tackle a challenging problem is to pull together a really diverse te am of people—across gender, age, race, experience, socioeconomic background. At BUMECHE, our goal is to encourage, educate, and empower a diverse pop ulation of young engineers to solve the most pressing problems in our future." -Alice White | Department Chair BUMechE
The 21st century requires engineers capable of designing new products and quickly getting them to customers. The Master of Science (MS) degree in Product Design and Manufacture is designed to train modern engineers to generate compelling new ideas—as well as the passion and leadership skills to translate those ideas into the practical design and mass production of innovative and cost-effective new products. Whether your future rests in entrepreneurial ventures or in a large company, this program provides students with in-depth knowledge of engineering design, new product manufacturing, and the business skills required for new product success.Gain the skills necessary to develop your compelling ideas into innovative and cost-effective new products.

For Spring 2022 & Fall 2022: The GRE is not needed from applicants to all master's programs (except LEAP) who have earned, or will earn, a 4 year degree from a U.S. institution. For these applicants, not submitting GRE scores will not have a negative impact on the evaluation of your application. See our Application Requirements for details.
Experienced Faculty
Courses are taught by experts with distinguished careers in industry and trailblazing research. Students gain real-world perspective and participate in cutting-edge innovation.
BUMecheE Professor of the Practice, Anna Thornton
"This course is incredible demanding but you're also gonna have a lot of fun…You're going to get a lot of hands on work but you're gonna get the grounding in that fundamental theory." -Dr. Anna Thornton
Additive Manufacturing As the range of materials used in 3D printing (or additive manufacturing as it is known in the industry) expands from plastics to metals, the commercial possibilities are expanding as well. Employers like GE are eager to understand and master the associated design and manufacturing challenges. Developed by Professor of the Practice, Dr. Anna Thornton, the new Additive Manufacturing course exposes students to the theory behind additive manufacturing processes and provides ample opportunities for hands-on experience working with the equipment available in EPIC (the Engineering Product Innovation Center), including our new GE metals 3D printer, one of only two dozen that will be housed in engineering schools nationally. This will ensure that students in our new degree program will be working with state-of-the-art tools in this rapidly evolving field. They have the opportunity to put into practice additive theory, taking real products from initial prototyping all the way to full production.
BUMecheE Professor of the Practice, Greg Blonder
"Our goal here is to train people to become designers that can actually get it into the market and make it a successful product." – Dr. Greg Blonder
Advanced Product Design Developed by Professor of the Practice, Dr. Greg Blonder, Advanced Product Design is a survey course that exposes students to all the elements of product design so they can figure out which area they would like to specialize in. This course covers Product-Market Fit (how to decide what product and what features to build); Basic engineering skills: (CAD, Artificial Intelligence skills, Materials, Design, how to fasten to parts together and not have them fall apart); how things are manufactured; and how to choose a design a product which is easily manufactured at cost and NET quality. In the second term, the students build on the knowledge of the first semester in a hands-on end-of-term team project.
State of the Art Facilities
Engineering Product Innovation Center: A 15,000 square foot state-of-the-art facility where you can build prototypes of your own ideas and take product design classes taught by experienced practitioners with a wealth of practical experience. Includes CAD hardware and software, robotic manufacturing line, 3D printers, materials characterization lab, electronics lab, full machine and carpentry shops, and, and a foundry. Learn More.
The BUild Lab: IDG Capital Student Innovation Center occupies a 6,000 square-foot space prominently situated on campus with plenty of team meeting rooms and student workspaces, offices for Innovate@BU program leaders and mentors, oversized video screens for presentations, and lots of open space for hackathons, accelerators, classes, and hands-on workshops with mentors and experienced innovators from industry, government, nonprofits, and the arts.
Innovative Curriculum
The core curriculum ensures students acquire the critical knowledge while allowing the flexibility to customize their academic focus through a strong selection of approved electives in Product Design, Manufacturing, and Physical Science, and Practicum.
Internships: Students can add an Engineering Practice designation – recognized by employers and research institutions — to their degrees by developing and applying technical, project management and leadership skills in a practical internship with a company or research institution.
Specializations: Students have the option of adding specializations in the rapidly emerging fields of data analytics, cybersecurity or robotics to their degrees. Learn More.
Thesis or Practicum Options: Students take an elective course and complete a practicum, where they work with industrial partners on real-world projects; take project-intensive courses; or engage in independent study.
